I was delighted to see in your December 17 edition that you had printed a business profile on Demetria Chadbourne and her team. I would like add some personal insight as to the reason why Demetria ranks consistently high among her peers.
In 1998, I was faced with not only putting my own house up for sale and looking for a new one, but also with selling the family farm in order to settle my late mother's estate. My mother had been left with numerous administrative loose ends when my father passed away a few years earlier which were subsequently passed down to me when my mother passed away last year. Demetria and her staff helped me to sort through and resolve all of the technical problems which stood in my way. Both properties were sold and my daughter and I are now very happy in our new home. One might think that this sounds like any typical real estate transaction, but that isn't what I remember most about my association with Demetria.
What remains in my memory is that Demetria never once treated me like "just another client with a house for sale." She immediately recognized that I was not only faced with some challenges that even the most experienced of real estate agents would dread, but I was in the midst of dealing with the loss of my mother and handling her affairs alone, with no other family members nearby. I was routinely amazed at her level of generosity, caring and enthusiasm. Her husband, Dennis, was equally as helpful and concerned, and her assistant, was absolutely delightful.
On more than one occasion, Dennis kindly offered me the use of his pickup truck. Not some old truck that he kept parked in the garage for occasional dump runs, but the truck which was his means of daily transportation. On another occasion, my daughter called me at work from her cell phone to declare she had forgotten her key and was locked out of the house. I was up to my elbows in work and remembered that Demetria's lockbox was on the door with a key to the house, so I suggested she call Demetria to get the lockbox combination. I called home just a little bit later to be sure that she had made her way into the house safely and was told that she did call Demetria, who kindly talked her through the combination on the lockbox. However, my daughter had not been able to successfully open it after several attempts. At that point she thanked Demetria for her help and said that she would call me back and I would come home and let her in. That was not acceptable to Demetria. Before my daughter knew it, Dennis had come to the rescue again, driving to the house himself to unlock the door for her. I don't believe any amount of commission is designed to cover acts of human kindness such as this.
These are just a couple of the numerous personal examples I could give, some small by comparison, some much, much larger. My point is that Demetria and Dennis aren't successful only because they get the job done and do it well, which they do, but, in my opinion, they are successful because they care about the people who put their faith in them and are willing to always go the extra mile, with an extra smile. Demetria and her team may rank # 2 with ERA, but they will always rank # 1 in my household."
